128th Flower Show at OOTY...

 

 I have been here for past three years and visiting the flower show every year.

With a new concept of invention in decoration of flowers the Horticulture department is giving experiment with different ideas. Last year it was the 127th Flower Show took place in at the Government Botanical Garden. Themed around "Royal" motifs, the event featured monumental floral installations, including a 70-foot-long castle and a giant swan, constructed using over three lakh flowers.

This year the 2026 theme  Rooted: Origins of American Gardening — takes flower enthusiasts on a journey through the history of American gardening, set to coincide with the year-long semiquincentennial celebration across the region and country in 2026.  

 The horticulture department hosted gardening contests, distributing prizes and rolling trophies to over 500 participants. 

This year the 128th Ooty Flower Show inaugurated on May 18th and runs through May 28, 2026 at the Government Botanical Garden in Udhagamandalam. Highlights include floral replicas made with thousands of carnations and over 50,000 flower pots. It often experience sudden showers this time of year so you have to pack an umbrella or raincoat. It is pleasant to witness the lakhs of flower decoration deployed, spread across 54 acres with the key Layout Details of;

  • Lower Garden: Houses a fern house with 127 species of ferns.
  • New Garden: Features floral carpets, ponds, and a rose garden.
  • Italian Garden: Originally laid by Italian POWs, it features terraced floral displays.
  • Conservatory & Nurseries: Contains a large collection of exotic flowering plants.
  • Fossil Tree: A 20-million-year-old fossilized tree trunk. 
    •  Its a must visit place of Ooty during the summer, normally the schools and colleges will be closed during the Month of May, so every year the crowd is big, the families with children are gathering during this Flower Show. Parking will be a big issue if you come after few hours of opening time you will find difficulty to find a parking slot. Visiting at 9.00 AM will be advisable to find a parking slot.
